Places to Go - Shopping and Dining

A wide variety of high-quality retailers in and near the Independence Center shopping mall include the Independence Commons, Independence Crossroads, Hartman Heritage, Eastland Center and Bolger Square shopping centers. Each center offers a variety of retail, restaurants and service businesses and attracts shoppers from across the metro area.

Independence offers many other successful retail areas, including well-known Noland Road, which runs through the heart of Independence and is home to several shopping centers and car dealerships.

For those wanting neighborhood and historic retail atmosphere, Independence offers quaint shopping and business districts such as the newly revitalized Historic Square, with buildings dating back to the 1800s.

Other established retail areas with neighborhood charm and/or historic significance include the Maywood, Fairmount, Susquehanna districts and the Englewood district.

Independence offers residents and visitors a broad mix of dining establishments. Ethnic foods such as Chinese, German, Italian, Mongolian and Mexican can be found throughout the city. Deli's, old-fashioned ice cream parlors, bar and grills, and formal restaurants can also be found. National chain restaurants and homegrown favorites line Noland Road, U.S. highways 40 and 24, 23rd Street, State Highway 291, 39th Street and various exits off Interstate 70 and Little Blue Parkway.

A wide range of movie-going options, from first-run movie theaters to discount shows and old movie classics, are available in the area. Independence has one of the metro area's largest movie theaters with a 20-screen complex in the Independence Commons Shopping Center, as well as the newly restored Pharaoh Cinema 4 located on the historic Independence Square. Independence also boasts a drive-in movie theatre, one of the oldest in the country located on 291 Highway.
