Special Events at Independence Square and in Town

The Independence Square Association hosts several special events throughout the year. The Annual Lawn & Garden Show is held the last Saturday in April and brings more than 60 vendors to the Square with flowers, plants, baskets and garden décor. A six-day celebration is held the first week in May to honor President Truman's birthday. In early October, the Kansas City Corvette Association brings their yearly display of more than 200 Corvettes to the Square. The Art & Antiques Festival, which features more than 50 local artists and antiquers offering fine paintings, ceramics and vintage discoveries, is also held in early October. The Strawberry Festival is hosted in late June at the Vaile Mansion, and the Pig Pickin' Chicken Lickin' Feast in September is hosted on the front lawn of the Bingham-Waggoner Estate. For more information about events on the Historic Independence Square, call (816) 252-0608. The Independence Heritage Festival, a celebration of culture, diversity and community in Independence, is held at McCoy Park the first week of October.
